How do you lower car insurance costs for young people in Tampa?

My 18-year-old son’s car insurance is going through the roof. It just jumped from $270 to $321/ month. He’s a college student living in Tampa, FL (40 miles from home address in Largo, fL), makes good grades, took driver’s ed in high school, has been driving 2 years and never had a ticket. It’s a new car (Mazda 3) that’s titled to my husband, but all 3 of us are on the policy. My husband and I are on a separate policy for our cars. Anyone have any suggestions on how to bring this number down?

My husband had 2 back-to-back accidents last year that were found to be the other driver’s fault and was paid 100% by the other driver’s insurance (including our deductible). Also, we had a claim on my son’s old car when someone hit it while it was legally parked on the street, and then ran. I had a quote of $261 from Traveler’s until they questioned these claims, then they bumped it to $331/ month. I guess they count against us, even though they weren’t our fault?

the best bet is to ask your insurance company – different companies offer differnt reductions. some offer discount for students based on grades or gpa , and others may dicsount if he takes a defensive driving course again. those should offer some smaller discounts.

however since his rate is so high – i would recomend shopping around for new insurance and getting free qotes. but be sure to tell them your full driving history when they quote you as the rate will change once they look up your driving record and see anything you didnt mention.

Newly licensed driver needs to transport car within Florida?

I’m 27 and newly licensed.. This is my first license. I’m cleaning up my act, all fines are paid and I completed the required course. I purchased a car in Tampa and want to pick it up and drive it back. I can’t obtain the title until I reach Tampa, and of course with no title comes no insurance and no tag. I have no prior insurance to transfer and transport companies want $400 for a 5 hour trip.. The car will still be in Florida. I need some advice on this one.

Within the same state is easy. You WILL have to have insurance before you can get tags of ANY kind, even temp tags. So put the policy in place the day before you reach Tampa – you can set it up in advance. Then you have the insurance card to get your temp tags, and you can drive it back to wherever you live in FL and get your real tags.

A local Tampa dealer, for a small fee, should help you with the tags.

My boyfriend and I are planning to move to florida after he gets off probation for his dui here in michigan. since were moving to a nicer climate and gas prices keep going up and up, he wants to get a bike. Being that my mother is an ex ray tech and Im parinoid already having lost my brother, father and step father (rightfullly so i think) I dont want him to bc theyre dangerous! Im hoping the insurance rate for a 25 yr old male w a dui would stear him away from it consitering hes also going to have plpd on his car as well. Is there anyone around tampa, about 25, have have one and about how much do u pay? and if you have a dui thats even better lol

Its hard to give an accurate quote because of all the different policies and they usually run your social security number to give you the correct price BUT i found these 2 sites where you can compare insurance at Insurance Hut and Florida No Fault Insurance that give out the best comparisons for auto insurance, i hope that helps.

Accident with no insurance in Tampa FL?

I have a 50cc scooter and accidentally rear ended a car going about 10 mph or less. The accident left a couple scratches about the size of the palm of my hand. When it happened I talked to her and told her that I had no insurance and that I would pay for someone to fix the paint on her bumper, then someone rushed over to say that he was a witness and gave her a business card of a lawyer. That day I got a call from her insurance saying that she went to a free clinic and she is trying to get some money from an injury and since I don’t have insurance (you aren’t required to have insurance on a scooter in Florida) they want me to pay them for everything. There was no accident report filed with the police.
Does anyone know what can actually happen to me?
What can I do about this?

No police report filed? Florida law requires you to report an accident if there is injury involved, or if the property damage exceeds $500.00. Their failure to file a police report and now trying to collect from an injury smacks of fraud, especially since a “witness” was conveniently there to present an attorney’s card. You need an attorney or a consult with legal aid.
