Trying to read through a car insurance policy with comprehension is not something even the pros can glide through without making some effort.

A poll conducted by Harris Interactive Poll – paid for by InsuranceQuotes.Com revealed that 87% of insured motorists had understood at least one part of their policy, while 36% said they had difficulty understanding any of it.

So many consumers don’t understand the terms of their home and auto insruance policies that lawmakers have taken note. Laws are on the books in 30 states to reinforce the notion that insurance policies should be readable to people who own them.

The Flesch Readability Test

In the early 1980s, some states said that a readable insurance policy is one that children in the eighth or ninth grade can read and understand. The Flesch Reading Ease test is applied to insurance policies in some states to measure document readability. The test is based on a 100-point scale. The closer test scores are to 100, the more readable the policy. In states that require a Flesch test, the passing score is anything between 40 and 50 points.

State Laws for Readability Vary

Connecticut lawmakers define “readable” documents in more specific ways. The layout for insurance documents must be standard, the font must be the same, “the use of unnecessarily long, complicated, or obscure words, sentences, paragraphs, or constructions,” may not be used. If a policy is 10,000 words or less, the entire document will be tested for readability. For policies that are more than 10,000 words, 200-word portions per page will be examined. Connecticut’s readability laws are similar to many others in the nation.

All of these measures are great, but policies don’t necessarily translate into easier reading material. So what’s missing?

I Live in a State with Readability Laws- I still Don’t Understand My Policy
One of the biggest areas of confusion for customers is knowing the difference between comprehensive coverage and collision coverage.

Here’s the difference:
Comprehensive coverage applies to damage when you’re not actually driving the car. If a tree falls on your car in the middle of your driveway you’re covered by comprehensive coverage. If you hit another car while you’re driving collision coverage is what will come to your rescue.

Where You Can Go for Help

If you still have trouble understanding the terms of your insurance policy agreement talk to your insurance agent or the customer service representatives for your company. It’s their job to help you understand what your policy does and does not cover.

If you’d rather talk to someone outside the company, state insurance regulators give free assistance to consumers. While the number of complaints against companies for unreadable documents is relatively small, state insurance regulators do address consumer complaints.

What if I Think I’m Covered But I Find out I’m Not?

Worst case scenario- you’ve fully read your policy before you’ve signed it, but discover after filing a claim that you didn’t have all the benefits you thought you would because of confusing language. You may have grounds to fight the insurance company through legal channels. Before you take them to court, see if you can get them to negotiate with you. Legal fees can climb exponentially so if a private deal can be worked out, this will save you time and money in the long-run.

Additional insurance reform is on the way. People in power have noticed that insurance policies are far too complex for the average customer and they’re trying to make sure your interests are protected. Until better policies are in place, take a little time to read over the general provisions of your insurance policy so that you understand what’s covered and what’s not before you find yourself filing a claim.

As a law-abiding citizen, you must hold a current car insurance policy. No one is exempt from this rule and for good reason. In the event of a car accident, insurance protects you and others from potentially debilitating financial and legal problems. The United States is one country that heavily penalizes people who drive without proper insurance. If you find yourself in a situation where you need to make an insurance claim, make sure you have the proper coverage. There are a multitude of reasons why insurance claims may be denied. Below are some common mistakes that lead to unwanted surprises when it’s time to file a claim.

Common Reasons Claims are Denied: Vehicle Modifications

It might sound fun and harmless to change the color of your vehicle, but the truth of the matter is that once you alter your vehicle in a permanent way, it could also alter the terms of your insurance agreement. Temporary modifications such as new seat covers will not alter the validity of your insurance policy but permanent changes that affect the appearance or performance of a vehicle can lead to denied claims after you suffer damages.

Failure to Pay

If you are delinquent in your insurance payments, your claim may be denied. There is no way to predict when you might need to file a claim. If you haven’t paid your monthly bill and you get in an accident or your car is damaged in some way, your insurance is not current and you are not covered. Talk to your insurance provider in the event you aren’t able to pay your bill on time. They may be able to help. It will be difficult to find cheap car insurance in the future if you don’t pay.

Fraud

Honesty is always the best policy. Represent yourself in person and on paper truthfully. If the insurance company discovers that you have misrepresented yourself or the situation, your claim will most likely be denied and you could also face serious insurance fraud charges.

Suspended License

The most common reason drivers are denied insurance claims is because they are driving with a suspended license.

Protect Yourself

In tough economic times, it’s easier to forgo payments on services where we see no immediate benefits. The nature of insurance is to cover you in the face of unforeseen events- events which are typically very costly and stressful. Keep your insurance and your driver’s license current so you won’t find yourself in a crisis without the coverage and help that you need.

There are a number of ways one can do to avoid spending excessively on car insurance premiums. These simple ways or techniques can act as cost saving measures that are not just easy to do but are also most likely going to lead to long term benefits. In the midst of current economic woes and rising prices, it is only logical employing such car insurance cost saving techniques.

Almost every insurance company provides favorable rates to customers or clients who are deemed to be less risky when it comes to making claims. As such, customers or clients who can convincingly show that they pose lower risks are given the reasonable priority.

For drivers or car owners to avail of low car insurance premiums, it is advisable to observe safe driving at all times and to reduce frequency of driving. Those who have lower mileage are given cheaper insurance rates. It is logical and almost universally accepted that the less frequent a person uses his or her car, the less likely is he or she going to be involved in accidents.

This is one of the main reasons why seniors and stay at home housewives usually enjoy lower car insurance rates. To minimize driving, it is recommended using public transportation as much as possible. Car pooling can also be a good option for lowering mileage. These are simple steps but they can certainly lower insurance costs.

It is also possible to have lower car insurance costs by shopping for insurance plans at least 30 days before an insurance policy’s expiration. Doing so will enable a more informed decision on which insurance plan to take—whether or not to stick with an old insurance provider or to move to a new one. This will also allow for opportunities to negotiate with a current car insurance provider.

Saving on car insurance is not difficult

Furthermore, many personal financial advisers also suggest combining a car insurance policy with home insurance or with the car insurance policy of a spouse or parents. There are cost advantages in combining multiple insurance policies and these can be best typified by lower insurance premiums.

Insurance companies usually offer “preferred” rates to customers who do more business with them so multiple insurance policies with a single insurance provider can really be advantageous. It also helps enrolling in a driving course to obtain greater driving competency. Likewise, maintaining a clean driving record can also be a big factor in convincing an insurance provider to lower insurance costs.

Generally, no fault insurance, otherwise known as personal injury protection, refers to any type of insurance contract where the policy holder is reimbursed for losses by his insurance carrier, despite of whose fault an accident actually is.

No Fault auto insurance is designed to give basic medical insurance coverage for individuals injured in car accidents especially during times when treatment is badly needed or when doctors have to recover fees. In ways, this actually also helps to reduce lawsuits.

Even so, the amounts paid by no fault insurance policies are sometimes not enough to pay for losses fully. No fault auto insurance does not cover suffering and pain at the same time.

In most states, where no fault car insurance is used, the policy often include compensation for health-related bills, lost pay and replacement services.

Replacement services tend to be the cost to pay somebody else to do something you would in most cases do yourself if you were not hurt like baby sitting.

In spite of popular beliefs, a no fault car insurance isn’t a replacement for your medical insurance. Even so, if you are injured in a vehicle crash, you can use your medical insurance policy and the no fault car insurance to pay for your expenses and recoup the losses.

Additionally, a no fault car insurance cannot be used to compensate for physical destruction in a motor vehicle accident. In case of accidents, a comprehensive insurance policy can assist recover both economic and non-economic damages for either the insured or the victim.

Nevertheless, no fault automobile insurance has it advantage. When 1 gets involved in an accident, for example, a no fault automobile insurance can assist him collect from his insurance regardless of who was at fault.

Your insurance coverage might ultimately impact your claim in an accident. Depending on how fault is determined by law in your state, getting a no fault automobile insurance might influence the outcome of one’s claim in a automobile accident.

By definition, vehicle accidents are certainly not a nice experience. If you have not been involved in one already count yourself fortunate. Insurance carriers know that eventually most people will have a car accident and file a compensation claim. Determined by the state you reside in, in the event you cause way too many crashes in a short period of time you might be expected look for SR22 Insurance Quotes

Here are several steps which may prove to be useful in the unfortunate event of a car accident.

Try to remain calm – It really is incredibly important to stay in control with the circumstance. After an accident, it’s not uncommon for the first impressions to be incorrect. Being calm and collected is by far your best bet.

Make certain everyone is fine – your main concern should be the well-being of all people involved in the accident.. Look around and make certain everyone is fine. Bare in mind that sometimes the individual injured the most may not be making the most noise. Having first-aid knowledge can be hugely beneficial.

Call the police – It’s not at all unusual for some people to ask to not call the police. Don’t pay attention to them. Even when no one is hurt, it is still far better to go through the proper channels.

Give your insurance company a telephone call – It is generally a good idea to talk with your insurance company at the earliest opportunity. There might be something obvious you are negelecting or specific information they require. It is helpful to have your auto insurance policy details in the car.

Do not play the blame game – It really is not your job to determine who is at fault. Regardless of whether you think it may be you who caused the car accident, leave the conclusion to the experts. Recalling what happened to the best of your recollection is all you are demanded to do.

Details exchange – Try to get as much data from the other motorist as possible. Address, name, car registration, telephone etc. Obviously, insurance details is what you need the most. Find out if there are actually any witnesses and other passengers.

At the end of the day, there is little to concern yourself with if nobody is seriously hurt. Getting your car or truck fixed or even replaced will be covered by your insurance. It is no surprise that right after an accident most people are pleased to be unharmed instead of angry that their car is damaged.

Auto accidents are simply something we have to deal with in this day and age. Doing our best in an unpleasant situation is often all we can do. As the old saying goes – “be ready for the worse and hope for the best”. Make sure you have plenty of cover on your auto insurance plan. The required by law limits in many cases are quite low but the fees following an accident keep increasing each and every year.

Are you one of the many individuals who are thinking about switching insurance policies in order to reduce costs?

It’s not really a big surprise that a large percent of drivers find deciding on car insurance to be a challenging and often puzzling process. Different options, legal phrases and occasionally manipulative insurance brokers make things even more difficult. Full coverage auto insurance and liability insurance are the two key covers which each and every car owner ought to be familiar with.

You may hear a lot of car insurance companies suggesting that you get Full Coverage auto insurance. It is indeed a policy that can be very advantageous based on your circumstances. In the end, if you are involved in an car accident and you have full coverage, your vehicle will be covered. And that is irrespective if you or the other motorist was to blame. You will discover two elements to full coverage car insurance. One is Comprehensive Insurance and the other is Collision Insurance. The purpose of the comprehensive cover is to guard you and pay for damages caused by pretty much everything, but another automobile. You’ve probably worked out by now that for damages done by another motor vehicle, the collision policy has you covered.

Full cover is most likely your best bet when you’re still paying for your vehicle. Also if you are buying a new vehicle, your financing company will demand that you get Full Coverage car insurance in order to keep the loan. The majority of people, who consider themselves safe drivers and own their vehicle do prefer to possess liability insurance only. On the other hand, if you have a teenager who will be driving your vehicle or a person over the age of 75 driving your car, you might choose to keep Full Coverage car insurance on your car.

Unlike full coverage, liability insurance is only responsible for damages or injuries you may cause to others. It won’t cover the cost of repairing your automobile. It is only a good idea to get liability cover if you feel comfortable you can pay for the financial burden after an accident.

For many people, car insurance means different things. For many, paying as little as possible for insurance is essentially the most important thing. Others prefer to have enough cover and not to worry about what may happen on the road. Often asking an experienced insurance adviser can be quite beneficial.

Whichever cover you decide on, remember to compare quotes from different companies in order to find the cheapest car insurance.

A freshly released study, published online, reveals which vehicles would be the most expensive to insure this year. Obviously, the costly powerful cars top the list. Regardless if you are a good driver, with years of experience and a clean driving record, purchasing Mercedes SL65 AMG means you have to pay over $3,500 a year in insurance costs.

It really is worth identifying that 8 from the first 14 cars in that list are Mercedes – SL65 AMG, SL63 AMG, S65 AMG, CL600, G55 AMG, CL65 AMG, CL63 AMG, SL550. 2 models of each manufacture Auston Martin, Porsche and BMW complete the list.

Obviously, in the event the SL65′s $198,750 suggested retail price is within reach, its possible you do not worry very much about saving money on auto insurance premiums. However , if you are a typical driver, your car insurance premiums really should be a consideration when shopping for a vehicle. In the end, why hunt down the best offer on a car only to discover it has exorbitant insurance costs?

A car’s premiums for collision and comprehensive coverage are mainly based on that vehicle’s “loss history,” reflecting how often and what type of claims other individuals have typically filed for that model. Vehicles chosen for speed and flash – as well as vehicles usually chosen by young, inexperienced drivers — pile up claims and thus garner higher insurance costs.

Include a motorist with a record of traffic violations, claims or accidents and you’ve got a recipe for genuinely distressing car insurance prices.

This year’s cheapest vehicle to insure will be the Chrysler Town & Country LX minivan. Its national average annual premium is $1,091.80, 1 / 3 of the price of insuring the Mercedes SL65 AMG.

The Toyota Sienna minivan and its LE version earn the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively, on the list of least-costly cars to insure.

Discounts for extra safety equipment can also bring insurance costs down. Such equipment includes electronic stability control, which could help motorists steer clear of accidents, and overhead airbags.

In case you have chosen to switch auto insurers, you may well be pondering how to make that happen, and whenever there’ll be fees involved. Changing your car insurance policy is not hard once you know what you should do.

It can be much easier than you imagine!

Routinely check your car insurance plan to be sure that you’re getting the very best insurance value for your bucks. You’ll learn that it pays to research prices. Practically in most states, rates for the exact same levels of insurance coverage fluctuate widely among different insurers. The explanation for this price variation will involve many complex aspects.

One of the leading factors is usually a company’s claims history with customers in your coverage category (e.g. people of equivalent age, number of claims, kind of vehicle, etc.). As an example, when a numerous people in the coverage group files insurance claims within a given calendar year, your premiums will more than likely surge. When this occurs, far better savings and lower overall premiums could be offered by other companies.

Exactly why change car insurers?

There are actually quite a few good reasons to change auto insurers. You could be disappointed with the services your current company provides, or alternatively you could have basically found a different insurance carrier ready to give you identical level of coverage for significantly less cash. Today, performing a frequent auto insurance cost check-up and analyzing the options has never been simpler and easier. As soon as you come to a decision to swap your car insurance to a new company, you may find that it’s relatively easy to complete the task.

Make sure you get new auto insurance upfront!

Have always the new insurance policy set up ahead of cancelling your current car insurance. You never want to have a lapse in auto insurance even for a single day. Your new insurance company is able to time the start of your brand-new insurance policy to match with the termination of the old insurance coverage.

When you should move insurance policies

A good time to buy insurance coverage is approximately 3 or 4 weeks before your current policy is getting ready to renew. Based on the laws where you live, a renewal notice will probably be sent to you about 30 days ahead of your new insurance policy period commences. The notice will explain your coverage, special discounts, along with your premium total. By using that data, it is possible to shop on the net for similar insurance coverages to discover your alternatives.

There’s no need to hold off until renewal

Every typical car insurance plans include a provision offering you the legal right to end your insurance policy whenever you want, when suitable notice is given to your insurer. There’s no need to hold off until renewal time. Even so, termination before a plan has renewed is more efficient. Doing this, you won’t have to stress about recovering the unused part of your paid premium. In case you decide to terminate in the middle of a cycle, the insurer will prorate your most recent premium payment up to the termination date and give back the rest to you.

Would they impose a penalty?

Sadly, some auto insurers may possibly charge a particular “short rate” termination fee in case you cancel during a policy period, so be sure you ask prior to deciding to switch. Considering they do charge a fee, you will need to decide if the better rate outweighs the fee you’ll pay. Remember that many companies offer earned accident forgiveness, future renewal discounts, and other benefits that grow with or depend on the amount of time you maintain a policy with that car insurance company.

How to cancel your old auto insurance

Generally, all you need to do to cancel your auto insurance policy is to inform your insurance company in writing, specifying the particular date you want the policy cancelled and the reason for the cancellation. If you’ve sold a car, you may be asked to provide a bill of sale, but only if you’re asking the company to “backdate” the cancellation. If you are simply switching to a new company, there’s no need to prove this, unless you’re cancelling a policy mid-term.

Is it legal for my old company to ask for my new policy?

Most states’ insurance laws actually require the company to confirm that you have a new policy for your car before cancelling your old policy. The reason is that most insurance companies have to report policies that are cancelled to the state insurance department, so the state can keep track of uninsured drivers. This helps reduce the number of uninsured drivers. If they let you cancel your old policy without proof that you had a new policy, they would have to report you as uninsured.

You must confirm cancellation

Don’t just walk away from your old policy without formally cancelling it, because most policies are “continuous” – which means your policy will continue to be renewed every six or 12 months, unless you cancel it. If you fail to cancel, your auto insurance company will continue to bill you for insurance and will eventually cancel the policy for failure to pay. Then, you have bills to dispute and phone calls to make! It’s usually easier to cancel in writing when you’re ready to switch.

When you receive an official policy cancellation notice from your car insurance company stating the date and time when your coverage will stop, you’ll know your cancellation has been processed correctly.

Going to Florida this Sept/Oct and hiring a car…should i be wary about what car and insurance to get?

As the question says going to Florida 22nd sept to the 8th oct and we want to hire a car but im unsure of what type of car to get and what type of insurance, are their different levels or insurance to get, is one car suitable but for the extra few pounds/dollars per day its worth getting a different car?

If anyone could help id appreciate it as I have never hired a car before for this length of time and we do intend to go all over and do as much as possible i.e. down to Tampa, keys maybe etc etc.

Is one car type better than another for that sort of mileage? If it is an extra few dollars/pounds a day i dont mind paying extra for an upgrade but there are only 2 of us going, my girlfriend and myself so i dont want to pay out for a Yukon as you can imagine?

Thanks

Start with what kind of car can you drive comfortably for long periods at home. Then look at all the car rental company options. I’m a big fan of Thrifty so I check out their UK website and forund they have a US car rental package (3 actually). Here’s a link: http://prepaid.thrifty.co.uk/packages-usa.cfm
From there, start the reservation. I assumed Orlando as a starting point (many Brits ask about Orland on Y!Answers so I guessed). You can get a Ford Escape which is a small SUV for 407.19 GBP inclusive of tax and ins. for the time period. It will be very comfortable for 2 people with luggage and whatever stuff you accumulate along the way.
A Ford Fusion should be more than adequate and get better gas milage. Gas (Petrol) is practically free in the US compared to UK so I wouldn’t worry about gas milage much if I were you. There are a bunch more choices so look over each and pick which will be most comfortable for you.

If you do decide to go with Thrifty, before you make a reservation, sign up for the Blue Chip Program. Most rental companies have something similar. If you go with another company, sign up for their’s. It will give you the opportunity to set up much of the paper work early (before you leave home) and when you arrive, there is a separate line (usually shorter) for Blue Chip Members (or which ever company equivalent). It saves a fair amount of time and headaches.
That’s all I can think of at the moment. If you have more questions feel free to email me.

Right now Im going to school in tampa while my home town is about 2.5/3 hours away. Im currently residing in the dorms on campus but next semester (january) I was going to move into an apartment. I know Ill have to change my drivers license but will I have to change my car insurance policy too? I know one of my classmates did and it went up considerably because of the move to tampa.

Probably not.

If you’re curious, you should probably talk with your insurance agent/company. It would really suck if you didn’t change your insurance then found out that you needed to after the collision.

While you’re talking to them, ask about renter’s insurance, too.
